Reiki is the greatest secret in the science of energetics.

Hawayo Takata - famous for bringing Reiki to the West

What is Reiki?

Reiki, often described as “universal life energy,” is a holistic healing practice that has its roots in early 20th-century Japan. Its story begins with Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist scholar and spiritual seeker, who was deeply interested in the nature of healing.

In the early 1920s, Dr. Usui embarked on a period of meditation, fasting, and prayer on Mount Kurama, a sacred site near Kyoto. After 21 days of intense spiritual practice, he experienced a profound revelation- a connection to a universal healing energy. This experience became the foundation of what we now know as Reiki.

Usui began teaching and practicing this method, emphasizing that Reiki was not only about physical healing but also about spiritual growth and balance. His teachings incorporated five guiding principles, encouraging practitioners to live with gratitude, integrity, compassion, and peace of mind.

In the 1930s, a Japanese-American woman named Hawayo Takata traveled to Japan seeking healing. After experiencing remarkable results with Reiki treatments, she became a dedicated student of Hayashi. Takata later returned to Hawaii and began teaching Reiki in the United States, ensuring that the practice spread across the West.

Through Takata’s efforts, Reiki gained recognition as both a healing art and a spiritual practice. By the time of her passing in 1980, she had trained 22 Reiki Masters, who would go on to spread Reiki worldwide.

Benefits of Reiki

Reiki is a gentle healing practice that promotes relaxation, reduces stress, and supports the body’s natural ability to heal. By restoring balance to the mind, body, and spirit, Reiki can ease tension, improve emotional well-being, and enhance clarity and focus. It is non-invasive, works well alongside medical treatments, and offers a natural path to greater peace, harmony, and overall well-being.

  • Reduces Stress and Promotes Relaxation
Reiki helps calm the nervous system, releasing tension and creating a state of deep relaxation that supports overall well-being.

  • Supports Natural Healing
By encouraging energy flow throughout the body, Reiki enhances the body’s natural ability to heal itself physically and emotionally.

  • Balances Energy and Emotions
Reiki can clear energy blockages, helping to restore balance, reduce anxiety, and promote emotional clarity.

  • Enhances Mental Clarity and Focus
Many people find Reiki sessions leave them feeling more centered, grounded, and focused.

  • Boosts Spiritual Growth
Beyond physical benefits, Reiki often deepens self-awareness, connection, and inner peace, supporting personal and spiritual growth.

  • Complements Other Therapies
Reiki is non-invasive and works well alongside traditional medical treatments, often used in hospitals and wellness programs to ease side effects and support recovery.

A Holistic Approach to Well-Being

Every Reiki session is unique, but the overall goal remains the same: to restore balance, release what no longer serves you, and bring the mind, body, and spirit into harmony. Whether you are seeking relief from stress, support for healing, or simply a deeper sense of peace, Reiki offers a natural and nurturing path forward.

The Five Principles of Reiki

The Five Principles of Reiki were taught by Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, as guiding ideals for living a balanced, peaceful life. They are simple yet powerful reminders to cultivate harmony within ourselves and with others:

  1. Just for today, I will not be angry.
Encourages letting go of anger and practicing patience.

  2. Just for today, I will not worry.
Promotes trust, presence, and inner peace instead of anxiety.

  3. Just for today, I will be grateful.
Reminds us to focus on appreciation and abundance.

  4. Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Inspires integrity, responsibility, and purpose in daily actions.

  5. Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.
Invites compassion, respect, and kindness toward others and ourselves.

These principles are not rigid rules but mindful practices, meant to be repeated daily as affirmations. They help Reiki practitioners (and anyone, really) align with a more peaceful, grateful, and compassionate way of living.
